General
Mofus automatically finds events for you based on your interests. You can also search for events manually and filter the results based on several criteria.
How does Mofus find events?
Events are entered by other Mofus members and venue managers. If you know of an event that’s not in our system, we encourage you to add it. Each new event makes Mofus a more valuable resource for all.
We recommend registering and then completing the Homepage Creator. The Mofus system will then build your customized homepage with events tailored to your interests.
What’s the benefit of registering?
Registering allows you to customize your homepage and save these settings between visits. You can also add your friends’ calendars to your homepage, add events to your calendar, and access your homepage regardless of where you are or what computer you're using.
Will you share my account or email information with anyone?
No. All of your account information is handled securely and we will never distribute it.
What is the Homepage Creator?
The Homepage Creator is a quick way to setup your homepage. It asks you about your interests and then creates your homepage with categories, venues, and tags based on those interests. One thing to keep in mind, it's best to use the Homepage Creator before you've done your own homepage customization as it will erase any changes you've made.
What does the name "Mofus" mean?
"Mofus" has no inherent meaning and the letters don't stand for anything. It just felt right.

What are these boxes all about?
Boxes are separate tools to help you find events. Some display events based on criteria such as venues or categories. Others include your personal calendar or popular tags. You can edit the content and location of boxes, add more boxes or remove any box except the My Calendar box.
How do I edit the content of a box?
To edit the content of a box, click on the box title. If the box is editable, a small form will appear allowing you to add content. To change the order of the content or remove specific items, right-click on the item you want to change.
What is the My Calendar box?
The My Calendar box shows the current month and the events you’ve added to your calendar. You can click on any date to change the date reference for all boxes on your homepage. This way, you can quickly search to find events of interest to you on any day. By default, Mofus displays events for the next three days. You can change this by selecting a different day range below the calendar.
Categories are a means to organize events in Mofus. All events should have at least one category to describe it and ideally a sub-category. This makes it easier for people to find events of interest to them.
What is the My Categories box?
The My Categories box shows upcoming events for the categories you’ve selected. You can add categories by clicking on the box title. You can change the order or remove categories by right-clicking on a category.
What is the My Venues box?
The My Venues box shows upcoming events for the venues you’ve selected. You can add venues by clicking on the box title. You can change the order or remove venues by right-clicking on a category.
Tags are short labels that help describe an event. For instance, for a live Salsa band (Category: Live Music > Latin), you could add tags for “salsa”, "cumbia", "merengue", and "bachata". This helps you and others find events when categories aren’t enough.
The My Tags box shows upcoming events for the tags you’ve added. You can add tags by clicking on the box title. You can change the order or remove tags by right-clicking on a tag.
What is the Top 50 Tags box?
The Top 50 Tags box contains the most commonly-used tags on Mofus. The tags with bigger text are the most commonly used. You can click on a tag to search for events with that tag association. This content of this box is generated by the Mofus system and cannot be edited.
What is the Top Events box?
The Top Events box contains the events that the most people have added to their calendars. This content of this box is generated by the Mofus system and cannot be edited.
What is the Top Rated box?
The Top Rated box contains the events with the highest average rating. This content of this box is generated by the Mofus system and cannot be edited.
What is the My Listings box?
The My Listings box contains events that you’ve added to the Mofus system. To add an event, click on the Add a New Event link at the top of any page.
What is the My Friends box?
The My Friends box contains the usernames of your friends and the events they’ve added to their calendars (assuming they’ve made their attendance public). You can invite friends to join Mofus by clicking on the
Tell Others link in the green navigation bar. You must be signed in to invite friends to join Mofus.
You need to be signed in and know the username of any friend you’d like to add to your My Friends box. Click on the title of your My Friends box (if it's not on your homepage, you'll have to add it) and type their username. You will then be able to see the events your friend has added to their public calendar, though they won't be able to see yours until they do the same. The My Friends box is still in development and will eventually include a means of finding and adding friends in a more convenient and secure way.
What is the My Bookmarks box?
When you view events, you can create a bookmark to the event by clicking on the “Add a bookmark to this event”. The event will now appear in the My Bookmarks box. To remove it, click on the “Remove the bookmark to this event” link when viewing the event details.
Yes. Above all of the boxes is a link, “Select a box to add to your page”. Select the box you’d like to add and click Add. The new box will appear on the upper left of your homepage.
Can I have two boxes of the same type?
Yes. This can be helpful if you’d like to organize your categories, tags, venues, or even friends.
Click on the title of the box. If it’s editable, a small form will display with editing options. To remove or change the order of box content, right-click on an item within the box.
Can I change the title of a box?
This feature is not currently available. If you'd like to be able to do this, please let us know using the
Contact Us page.
What happens if I accidentally remove a box?
You will have to add the same type of box using the “Select a box to add to your page” link, which is just above the box area on your homepage. You will have to re-add content and set the order again.
How do I change the location of the boxes on the page?
You can click and drag boxes to other locations on your homepage by clicking on the box header (the blue area) and dragging the box to the new location. Other boxes will move out of the way and a dotted outline will appear when the box is ready to be placed in the new location.
How do I change the order or remove items in my boxes?
Right-click on a header within a box. Mofus will display options for changing the order or removing the item.
Can I find events for other areas?
Yes. Click on the “change location” link just to the right of your current city. Mofus will now display events for the new area.

How do I bookmark an event?
Below the event title is a link to "Save to Bookmarks". Clicking on this link will save the event to your Bookmarks box on your homepage. If you don't have the Bookmarks box on your homepage, click on the "Select a box to add to your page" link (upper left of your homepage) and add the box. Note that the Bookmarks box only displays events that fall within the date range you have selected in your Calendar box.
How do I add an event to my calendar?
Below the event title is a link to "Add to my Calendar". Clicking on this link provides you with an option to add it to either your public or private calendar. If you add it to your public calendar, all of your Friends will be able to see that you're attending. If you add it to your private calendar, only you will see it.
How do I invite others to an event?
Below the event title is a link to "Share this Event". Clicking on this link displays a pop-up box from which you can select any of your Friends, add others using their email addresses, and add a personal message. All of your invitees will receive an email with a link to the event and your personal message.
Can I add a tag for the event?
Absolutely. On the right side of the page is the Tags box and a link to "Add Tags". You can add up to ten tags for an event.
There's a mistake in the event listing. What should I do?
Depending on the severity of the mistake, there are three things you could do. If it's a relatively minor mistake or if you think the listing lacks information, you can add a comment at the bottom of the page for others to read. If it's an important, but honest mistake, you can contact the lister of the event by clicking on their username below the event description. This will take you to their page from which you can send them a private message. If the event listing clearly intends to deceive other users or contains inappropriate content, you can click on the "Flag for Review" link, provide a short explanation, and send it to the Mofus moderators for review.
What should I do if I see something that's not an event at all or is inappropriate?
If the event listing clearly intends to deceive other users or contains inappropriate content, you can click on the "Flag for Review" link, provide a short explanation, and send it to the Mofus moderators for review.
How can I contact the person who listed the event?
You can contact the lister of the event by clicking on their username below the event description. This will take you to their page from which you can send them a private message.
How do I get more information about the venue?
In the yellow box to the right, there is basic contact information about the venue. The venue name links to more venue information on Mofus, including all upcoming events for that venue and the ability to get directions to it. The yellow box also often contains a link to the venue's own website, which opens in a new window.
Is it possible to get directions to the event?
Yes. Just click on the venue name in the yellow box on the right, which links to more venue information on Mofus, including all upcoming events for that venue and the ability to get directions to it.
What types of comments can I write in the Comment area?
The Comment area is a great place to either provide more information about the event, share your feelings about it, or ask a question.
Add a New Event Page
To add an event, you must first have an account and be logged in. Then, simply click on the Add a New Event link in the yellow navigation bar and fill out the form.
Yes. You can add as many events as you like free of charge.
What kinds of events can I add?
Mofus supports any kind of public event, from live music to car shows to ping pong tournaments to yoga classes. Additionally, anyone can add an event at any venue. For instance, if your favorite band is coming to town, adding the event to the Mofus database would be a great way to promote it. All we ask is that you try your best to accurately describe the event.
Can I add a private event?
Currently, Mofus only supports public events.
What do I need to know before adding an event?
The only requirements for adding an event are a title, time, and location. However, we recommend you take a little extra time to help others find your event by including at least one category and a couple tags. Additionally, including a description will help prospective attendees decide to attend your event.
In the Where text field, type a keyword from the venue's title. For example, if the venue is called The Bedrock Cafe, try typing "bedrock" (without the quotes). If the venue is already in the system, Mofus will display it and any other matches for that keyword. We recommend not using common keywords such as "the", which may not be in the Mofus venue title.
The venue isn't in the system. What should I do?
Don't panic. Simply click on the "Not listed? Add a new venue..." link. You'll then be able to enter the venue information yourself. This may sound intimidating and tedious, but a quick search on
Google Maps will usually give you all the information you need. Once you've entered the venue information, it's in the database to stay and you'll have the eternal gratitude of your fellow members.
What is a repeating event?
Repeating events are any events that repeat in a predictable way in the same location. Examples of this would be an event that repeats every Monday and Thursday, an event that's always on the third Thursday of the month, an event that's always on the 15th of the month, or an event that repeats every other Friday. Once you check the Repeat checkbox, Mofus allows you to indicate how the event repeats. You can even have the repeating event end on a set date, repeat a specific number of times, or repeat forever. This way, you only have to enter the event once. Note that repeating events must start at the same time and be at the same location. If this is not the case, you may be better off listing the events individually using the "Add a Similar Event" button that displays after you submit an event.
Categories help other users determine what type of event this is. Additionally, if your event belongs in a category that another user is tracking on their homepage, they will see it there. You can use up to three categories to describe your event.
Tags make up for the inherent limitations of categories. If you have an event that is kind of one category and kind of another, do your best with the available categories and then add some tags to better describe it. If one of your tags matches a tag that another user is tracking on their homepage, they will see it there. Samples of tags include "rockabilly", "fantasy football", "world cup", and "slam poetry." You can add up to four tags when creating an event. If you'd like to add more, once you've created the event you can visit the event page and add more tags.
What should I put in the description?
The description area gives you a chance to say more about the event. Perhaps people should know there's a free dance class before the band starts or that students with ID can get in for half price. Of course, you can also describe the event itself in as much detail as you like. Mofus does search event descriptions when performing a manual search, but not when selecting events to display on a user's homepage.
Can I include a URL in the description?
Absolutely, just select the complete URL in the description and click the "URL" button just above the Description text box. The system will turn the text into an active link. You can preview the description by clicking the Preview button immediately below the box.
Can I include a photo in the description?
Mofus does not currently support photos in descriptions or event listings. However, you're welcome to add a link to a webpage with photos or a link to the photo itself if you like.
I want to enter a bunch of similar events, either for one event (such as a band) in different venues or different events at the same venue. What's the fastest way to do this?
If the events are at the same time and place, just on different days, checking the Repeat checkbox is the fastest way. However, when either the event or venue changes, it's best to add the events individually by clicking the "Add a Similar Event" button that appears after you add the first event. When you click this button, Mofus creates a copy of the previous event for you to edit. This way, you only have to change the information that's different from the previous event. You can do this as many times as you like. This can be very handy for a band or performer that's on tour or for a venue with a busy lineup.
What are these options I see after submitting the event?
Mofus displays four buttons once you've submitted an event, "Return to Home Page", "Edit this Event", "Add a New Event", and "Add a Similar Event." "Return to Home Page" obviously takes you back to the homepage. "Edit this Event" allows you to re-open the event you just entered and make changes if you like. "Add a New Event" creates a new event with no pre-entered information (just like when you entered your first event). "Add a Similar Event" creates a new event, but pre-enters the same information from the event you just entered. This way, you can easily create multiple events that only differ slightly from each other.
Who can edit events I've entered?
Only you and the Mofus moderators can edit your events. Whenever you view one of your events, Mofus will display a small Edit link next to the event title. This way, you can easily edit the event if necessary. Other users won't see this link.
How do I track the events I've entered?
There are two easy ways to track events you've entered. First, you can add the My Listings box to your homepage. This box displays all the events you've listed for the dates shown. You can then click on an event and then the Edit link that appears next to the title. The second way is to navigate to your profile page, which displays all the events you've listed. The fastest way to navigate to your profile page is to find an event you've listed and click on your username, which displays above the event description. Once you've been to your profile page, you can bookmark it using your browser so that you can go to it directly whenever you like.
How do I edit an event I've entered?
Click on the event to see the event page. If you've entered the event, Mofus displays an Edit link to the right of the title. Click on this link to edit the event.
How do I cancel an event I've entered?
Click on the event to see the event page. If you've entered the event, Mofus displays an Edit link to the right of the title. Click on this link to edit the event. At the bottom of the page, click on the Delete Event button.
